A rhytidectomy, commonly referred to as facelift surgery, improves the visible signs of aging, reduces wrinkles, and tightens facial muscles in the face and jaw. A common cosmetic procedure, facelift surgery can help reverse the effects of time, gravity, stress, and sun exposure. During facelift surgery, excess fat is removed, underlying muscles are tightened, and the skin of the face and neck is redraped to create a natural and youthful appearance. Dr. J. Gregory Kjar has performed many facelift surgeries and has many satisfied patients in Salt Lake City and throughout Utah. If you are interested in facelift surgery, contact our Bountiful office and schedule a consultation with our skilled and friendly cosmetic team.
The best candidates for facelift surgery are healthy patients whose skin is still relatively supple and elastic and whose bone structure is well defined. Although patients of almost any age may benefit from facelift surgery, most patients are in their 40s to 60s. Patients considering facelift surgery should thoroughly discuss their goals and expectations with Dr. Kjar. Some patients might find that they can attain their goals with a less invasive procedure, such as BOTOX® treatment, chemical peel, microdermabrasion or laser treatment. Other patients may be happier with their results if facelift surgery were combined with other procedures, such as a brow lift. To find out if you are a candidate, contact Dr. Kjar’s Salt Lake City, Utah-area office and arrange a facelift evaluation.
Prior to facelift surgery, Dr. Kjar will give you specific preoperative guidelines. Carefully follow these instructions. If you smoke, you must stop at least a week or two before and after the surgery; smoking can interfere with the healing of your skin. If your hair is short, you may choose to grow it out before surgery to hide scars while they heal.
Facelift surgery typically requires several hours to complete. Incisions are made above the hairline at the temples, extend to the front of the ear, and continue behind the ear. If neck work is also required, a small incision may be made under the chin. Dr. Kjar will then carefully separate the skin from the fat and muscle below. The underlying muscles and membrane are tightened, the skin is pulled back, and the excess is removed.
Typically, there isn’t any significant discomfort following facelift surgery. If you do experience pain or discomfort, that can be lessened with prescription pain medication. We recommend the use of Jane Iredale™ mineral makeup after surgery. Facelift surgery provides significant wrinkle reduction. Although it can’t stop the aging process, facelift surgery does “turn back the clock,” removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of the face and neck.
