Breast Implants
Breast implants are the sacs of liquid or gel that are inserted behind the breast to provide additional firmness and volume. Breast implants are available in a wide variety of sizes. Saline implants have been demonstrated to be safe and provide high short- and long-term satisfaction rates. We also offer silicone implants, recently re-approved and deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration. When Dr. Kjar consults with a patient, he provides size options that take into account both the patient’s goals and anatomic considerations (including chest diameter and skin elasticity).
Generally, Dr. Kjar recommends positioning breast implants under the muscle. Submuscular breast augmentation results appear more natural and decrease the likelihood of rippling. Also, there is a decreased risk of capsular contracture or hardening, and it allows for a better view during a mammogram.
Incision Sites
One of the top priorities for both patient and surgeon is the discreet placement of breast augmentation incisions during surgery. Although scars fade with time, they do not disappear. For this reason, making the incision in an inconspicuous location enhances the overall results of the surgery. The four most commonly used incision sites are:
- beneath the breast
- along the edge of the areola
- in the armpit
Areola and crease breast augmentation incisions are the most popular incision sites, but the location is determined on an individualized basis, weighing both patient’s wishes and individual anatomy. Breast Augmentation Risks
All surgical procedures carry a certain degree of risk. Potential breast augmentation complications include:
- temporary soreness
- temporary swelling
- temporary bruising
- changes in nipple sensation
- capsular contracture
- infection
- implant rupture or displacement
